Section 2: Living with Autism
SECTION 2

In this final section of the course, we look at what life is like living with autism and how it may be impacted by certain workplaces.

About this course

Autism is a term that describes an entire spectrum of developmental conditions that affect a person's communication and perception of the world in a number of unique ways. Despite the fact that this condition has been researched widely across the world, what we know about it is constantly evolving, and the knowledge we have today differs significantly from what we thought we knew 20 years ago.

It’s important to note that autism is not an illness or a learning disability. You simply need to understand it as a different way of experiencing the world.

This course can help your staff gain a better understanding of autism and what adjustments can be made to the workplace to better accommodate those with autism.

Interesting and refreshing for my work place.

Really informative course
RatingRatingRatingRatingRating

I really value this training as it gave me the knowledge of different aspects of autism pertinent to my role. I feel some content may need updating as there has been evidence that brain scans can detect autism, I not sure if these are still in trial stage, but it may be worth mentioning in the training. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-10929032

Good info, but not many examples
RatingRatingRatingRatingRating

There is a lot to take in at once, and in describing the spectrum as so varied it makes it difficult to fully understand how it may present without examples of a single individual's experience. Maybe a description of a single person's traits/daily life as an example, and how it affects them positively and negatively, may help compared to listing so many potential traits separately. May be an opportunity to dismiss outdated and harmful stigma by explaining less stereotypical examples, but examples may mis-represent so might not be suitableThere is also slight mis-representation when autistic meltdowns are mentioned - not all autistics have meltdowns, and shutdowns are a common difference that many experience instead. Shutdowns often seem overlooked as it involves withdrawing and dissociating, which is less outwardly-noticeable compared to the outward/angry stereotype of meltdowns (which to those who don't outwardly express their stress and instead shut down, can be an unhelpful stigma)

Concise and effective.

A very interesting course that relayed information in a clear and accessible way. There was only one point that had a lack of clarity which meant I slipped up on one question in the test.

Was a good refreshing course.
