Frequently asked questions

Whilst all three words have different meanings, Equality, diversity, and inclusion is all about treating everyone equally and fairly, regardless of their background, age, religion, sexual orientation, marital status, race, gender, if they have a disability, and beliefs. Equality is about providing equal opportunities and protecting people from discrimination. Diversity refers to the differences between people and more importantly, that we recognise those differences, respect them and celebrate them. And finally, inclusion refers to a persons experience within their workplace and the extent to which they feel included and valued. It's about giving people equal access and most people see inclusion as a human right.
Everyone deserves to be treated equally and with respect in the workplace, but having an equal, diverse, and inclusive workforce also has many benefits including better working relationships, greater productivity, increased performance and profitability, attracting and retaining the best talent, better brand reputation and more innovation.
Under the Equality Act 2010, protected characteristics include age, race, sex, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity, gender reassignment, religion or belief, marital status, and disability.
There are a number of things that employers and employees can do to improve EDI in the workplace. Just a few of these things include having the right policies in place (Equality & Diversity policy, Anti-Bullying & Harassment policy, Grievance policy, and many more), creating company values that place importance on EDI, training and self-learning, employing HR professionals and having dedicated time for discussing social issues.
