Supporting International Men’s Health Week
Posted 2 years ago
Today (12 June 2023) marks the start of International Men’s Health Week, an awareness campaign designed to promote information, services and treatment men need to live healthier and more fulfilling lives.
This year’s theme is ‘Men’s Health and the Internet’, which is all about the impact of technology and social media on mental health.
The importance of supporting men’s health in the workplace
We’re living in a digital era, where technology plays a massive role in all our lives. Whilst technology allows us to improve our lives in many ways, it can have negative effects on a person if not used properly.
For example, too much screen time takes up time that could be spent on a healthier activity. Too much time on social media can also lead to individuals creating unrealistic (and potentially unhealthy) comparisons between their own lives and that of others, including ‘influencers’, who may only be showcasing the better parts of their lives.
Unfortunately, these issues aren’t taken seriously by everyone. And whilst the negative stigma surrounding men’s mental wellbeing is slowly fading away, there’s still much that can be done to further reduce this stigma and encourage men to have an open dialogue about their mental health and wellbeing.
Anything that can encourage men to take their health seriously is a good thing, so awareness weeks such as this help to shine a light, generate conversation and encourage positive action.
How can you get involved?
There are many ways to get involved in International Men’s Health Week. All you need to do is promote positive wellbeing, both in the workplace and during free time. Here are a few examples of what you can do to get involved…
- Share useful information – One of the easiest ways to get involved is by simply sharing useful information that might help someone improve their health. Create awareness with an email to staff, sharing something on your social channels, or with posters around the workplace – play your part!
- Plan activities away from screens – Encourage staff to put their devices down and get active. Remember, this awareness campaign is about all aspects of men’s health, not just their mental wellbeing. See if you can engage staff in a physical activity.
- Donate to a good cause – There are a number of men’s health charities that could do with your support. They’re able to provide men with professional help, whether it’s addressing their physical or mental wellbeing.
- Provide awareness training – Awareness training will help you to improve workplace relationships, promote a more positive work environment, and increase awareness of what constitutes a good work/life balance.
