Why is this training important?
Suicide is a difficult subject, and for many people it can feel uncomfortable or upsetting to talk about. But for those who are struggling, being seen, heard and supported can make an enormous difference. Learning how to approach this topic with care helps create spaces where people feel safer to open up and seek help when they need it.
Many people who experience suicidal thoughts don’t know how to ask for help, or fear being judged if they do. This can leave them feeling isolated at a time when connection matters most.
This training helps break down some of the common fears and misconceptions around suicide, including the worry that talking about it might make things worse. Learners are shown that asking direct, compassionate questions can actually reduce risk by giving someone permission to speak openly and feel heard. By understanding the warning signs and risk factors, people are better equipped to notice when something may be wrong, even when signs are subtle or unexpected.
The course also recognises that supporting someone at risk can be emotionally challenging. Learners are guided on how to offer support without taking on responsibility for “fixing” the situation, and how to care for their own wellbeing along the way. By increasing awareness, confidence, and compassion, this training helps create cultures where people feel safer to talk, seek help, and support one another when it matters most.
