Fluids & Nutrition in Care - Section 1: Nutrition and Hydration
SECTION 1

What we eat and drink is absolutely vital to both our physical health and our mental wellbeing. In our first section, we will look at the importance of nutrition and hydration for those in Care who may not be able to do this for themselves and may rely on you to provide them with all the fluids and nutrients they need.

Fluids & Nutrition in Care - Section 2: Food Safety
SECTION 2

Whether you regularly prepare meals for your patients or simply supply the odd snack or two, you need to make sure that what you provide them with is safe and free from contamination. There are four main ways in which food can become contaminated. These are: physical, chemical, allergenic and bacterial.

Fluids & Nutrition in Care - Section 3: Promoting Adequate Nutrition & Hydration
SECTION 3

Whenever anybody enters care or receives support from a care worker, even if it’s only short term, an assessment should be made about their nutrition and hydration in order to find out exactly what needs they have. The assessment should be recorded in their Care Plan and should cover whether they have any allergies, whether they need any support eating and drinking.

About this course

What we put into our body is vital to our health and wellbeing, this is a particular concern for those living in Care. It is vital that those living in Care get the proper nutrients and diet that they need as (in some cases) they are more susceptible to illness.

As well as knowing what fluids, foods and nutrition patients will need and how to handle food safety, employees in Care will also know what signs and symptoms of poor nutrition & hydration to look out for.

Employees will learn the importance of good nutrition & hydration and why it is important for maintaining good health and wellbeing in Care residents.

Standard 8 of the Care Certificate - Fluids & Nutrition - ensures that staff:

  • understand principles or hydration, food safety & nutrition
  • help individuals to have access to fluids which sits in line with their care plan
  • help individuals to have access to food and nutrition in line with their care plan
