Misleading information

Sex is not assigned at birth based on perceived external characteristics. Biological sex is established at conception and is typically binary—XX (female) or XY (male) chromosomes—with very rare intersex variations. Intersex describes congenital conditions—such as androgen insensitivity or chromosomal variations—where sex characteristics may be ambiguous or atypical. Intersex people almost always possess XX or XY chromosomes and are most often classified clinically as female or male, although distinctions may exist in internal anatomy or hormone levels. Intersex is a biological condition and not a gender identity. Gender identity refers to how a person self‑identifies (e.g. man, woman, non‑binary), which is separate from biological sex. **In a 16 April 2025 judgment (For Women Scotland Ltd v Scottish Ministers), the UK Supreme Court unanimously ruled that under the Equality Act 2010, the legal definitions of ‘sex’, ‘woman’ and ‘man’ refer to biological sex at birth, not gender identity or acquired gender—even when someone holds a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) Reddit +15 Actons Solicitors +15 Them +15 .** That judgment did not remove existing anti‑discrimination protections for trans individuals under the protected characteristic of ‘gender reassignment’ in the Equality Act.

It was enlightening and directive.
