Did you know that one in four women and one in six men will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime? Sexual assault is the least-reported violent crime; a recent study found that only 28% of victims go on to report the assault to the police. 

People and organisations around the world are helping spread awareness of sexual assault with the use of the hashtag #itsnotok. Silence makes the crime seem rare when the truth is that sexual assault is actually an epidemic, it also isolates sexual assault victims even further. 

The shocking statistics behind sexual abuse and violence 

It's shocking enough to think that in 2018 sexual abuse and sexual violence is still happening every single day, but some of the statistics below are even harder to believe: 

• In 8 out of 10 sexual abuse or sexual violence cases, the victim knows the perpetrator. 
• 1 in 7 victims of sexual assault is under the age of 6. 
• Almost 60% of the time, sexual assault occurs in the victim's home or the home of a relative, neighbour or friend.
• Developmentally disabled adults are more likely to be victims of sexual assault, with up to 83% of females and 32% of males being assaulted.
