Different classes of fire
SECTION 1

This short course will cover the correct procedure for handling fire extinguishers, when to tackle a fire, and which fires require which extinguishers. You will also learn about using fire blankets and the importance of only attempting to tackle a fire if you feel confident that you can extinguish it without risking your safety.

About this course

There are five different classes of fire, each identified by a letter; these are A, B, C, D, and F.

It’s vital that people know what to do before tackling a fire, which should be included in your fire response plan. After the fire alarm has been raised and the risks have been assessed with tackling the fire, employees then need to work by the ONE FIRE, ONE EXTINGUISHER rule - if they think it’ll take more than one extinguisher to put out the fire, it’s too big to tackle and they need to evacuate immediately.

This Fire Extinguisher Training will ensure that if staff find a fire to be small enough to tackle with one fire extinguisher, they know what kind of fire extinguisher should be used for each fire, what class of fire it is, and the safety measure to take when using an extinguisher.

Every member of staff legally requires some kind of Fire Awareness Training which is why alongside our fire extinguisher course, we also offer Fire Awareness Training and Fire Warden Training. We also provide an array of Fire Safety training courses to improve your employee's fire safety knowledge.

Why is this training important?

Compliance

It's important that you comply with the law and know the ways in which it affects you and the way you work.

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) order 2005 states that "in order to safeguard the safety of relevant persons, the responsible person must ensure that":

(a)the premises are, to the extent that it is appropriate, equipped with appropriate fire-fighting equipment and with fire detectors and alarms; and
(b)any non-automatic fire-fighting equipment so provided is easily accessible, simple to use and indicated by signs.

Equipment will include the use of fire extinguishers. Fire and Health and Safety legislation also requires employers to provide fire training for all staff by law. It's good practice for employers to train staff at least every 12 months.

Frequently asked questions

This is down to your training administrator who will set expiry dates for training. However, we recommend that fire extinguisher training be taken annually and it's what the majority of our clients opt for.
PASS is the acronym that details how to use a fire extinguisher. It stands for (P)ull the pin, (A)im at the base of the fire, (S)queeze or press the handle and (S)weep from side to side.
According to BAFE guidelines, you should service water-based, powder, powder-primary sealed, clean agent, halon, and CO2 fire extinguishers every 12 months.
The general rule of thumb is that fire extinguishers should be checked at least once a month.
Our Fire Extinguisher training course is only 10 minutes long, so your staff members can easily fit the course around their other work commitments.
