There are so many ways of defining transformational leadership skills and what it means to be an effective leader.
What is transformational leadership?
The 17th-century philosopher, Thomas Hobbes, believed that a good leader ruled with an iron fist to keep people from their naturally wicked ways; Machiavelli felt that good leadership meant always doing what needed to be done, regardless of what anyone else thought or the impact on others. Plato believed that the power that comes with leadership could corrupt people, and so no good person would ever choose to be a leader and would need to be encouraged, or even forced, to take charge.
Transformational leadership qualities come in all shapes and sizes, including:
- To lead an army into battle
- To run a household
- To captain a sports team
- To help a team work together efficiently
- To step up in a crisis
- To share skills and knowledge with empathy and effectiveness
- To help others
- To encourage and inspire
- To share one's vision and passion for creating positive change
Each and every one of the above is a key example of leadership.
Transformational leadership qualities
So, it seems that leadership isn't a skill in itself, nor is there only one set of skills that defines a good leader.
Some are more charismatic, for instance, better at public speaking or the ability to plan robust strategies. Some leaders are highly organised. But regardless of their traits or areas of strength, great leaders will almost always have these four characteristics of a transformational leader:
- They envision change
- They implement plans
- They treat people with kindness
- They empower others to help make their vision a reality
That's what it means to be a good leader, whether it's within your family home, your friendship circle, at work, or out in the wider community.
