Asbestos Awareness - Why IATP and IOSH are just as important as UKATA

Why IATP and IOSH is just as important as UKATA

Firstly, it’s important to note that by law, every employer must ensure that adequate information, instruction, and training is given to any worker who has any chance of disturbing asbestos during their normal working day.

However, there is no mandatory endorsement, no organisation, or company whose training certificate MUST be awarded to satisfy this legal requirement. As the HSE does not endorse any organisations, products, or services of any kind, it’s down to individual employers to determine whether a training provider is suitable or not.

So, there is a common misconception that UKATA approval is a legal requirement for Asbestos Awareness Training - and whilst it does help prove the credibility of certain training courses, it's not essential… and there are other approvals that are arguably more important!

For example, our Asbestos Awareness Training course is IOSH approved, meaning that it is globally recognised, rather than a UKATA approval which is only recognised in the UK.

To gain this approval, our course was subject to thorough review from IOSH to check that it complies with current legislation and that the information is sufficient to both raise awareness and help people stay safe.

But that’s not all, we also have an IATP approval - which, like the UKATA, is an approval body recognised in the UK.

What our Asbestos Awareness Training covers

Our Asbestos Awareness Training gives a description of asbestos, where it might be found, and covers the necessary emergency procedures following asbestos exposure. It goes on to also cover:

  • The properties of asbestos and its effects on health - including the increased risk of developing lung cancer for asbestos workers who smoke
  • The types, uses, and likely occurrence of asbestos and asbestos materials in buildings
  • The general procedures to deal with an emergency, e.g. an uncontrolled release of asbestos dust into the workplace, and
  • How to avoid the risk of exposure to asbestos.

Here's what our clients have to say about our Asbestos Awareness Training course:

Doing this course has really made me aware of the dangers from asbestos. It has also highlighted best practice if ever I suspect there is asbestos in any area. The course is presented in an easy to understand format but at all times does emphasise how serious the effects of asbestos contamination can be. I would personally recommend that all get the opportunity to try this course.

John Duncanson

This course gives a very good basic understanding as what to look out for and how to manage the potential dangers of asbestos in a work environment. It is delivered in a very clear and precise manner which is easily understandable to people who may not realise the dangers of asbestos.
