The course is pretty much a copy & paste from the Mental health Awareness Course. From the slides to the test, or questions, this training offers little for Management. Throughout the material, at each step there should be suitable advice for Management, a Manager as this is not "personal" mental health, but how managers can support the "external" mental health issues of their employees. The course should have slides, examples for managers on how to act, approach and communicate with those they feel are suffering ill health, the risks to them such as workplace anger, violence & identify the correct planning for such discussion, or correct channels, referring to HSE guidance. If a Manager approaches an employee in the wrong place, or time this could greatly heighten poor mental ill health and lead to increased risks of harm & suicide. Ref to safety reps, HR, or Mental Health First Aiders/ Advocates can be included.
Aimed at managerial level, this course was too simplistic and the test in many places was ridiculously elementary. Better would have been to give a number of scenarios, role play or other demonstration as to how to recognize early onset of mental health issues amongst employees and methods of intervention by managers.
After completing the Mental Health Awareness course, I then did the Mental Health Awareness course for Managers but the first 28 slides, were a repeat of the Mental Health Awareness course. I feel it should just have been an additional 10 slides, it was a waste of time going through the previous course all again.
There is some good content in the course for staff but its a but basic for managers with lot of it is a bit obvious. Not enough practical advice for managers. Feels like an adapted awareness course.
Overly structured (like this feedback form) and bordering on condescending, without being interactive or giving the user time and functions to explore the opinions being put across as facts (in some cases). I found this very instructional but lacking credibility.
So ok information in this but the clear message should be to get people to reach out to help by professionals as some people really don't understand the severity of some of their conditions.I also feel that telling someone to replace a negative thought with a positive one is pretty stupid and clearly, you don't seem to understand depression. Thought it was insulting.
The first half seemed to be aimed at those suffering with ,mental health and how they can manage it, which then didn't feel relevant to how I can manage individuals in my team. It was quite low brow/patronising - being told to think of happy thoughts instead of negative ones. I did find it helpful to have a well being action plan in place where both the team member and manager can work together. Unfortunately for my situation, working together on such a plan is not possible as HR are dealing with the issue.
Again no mention of trade unions and the important role they play on supporting members who are suffering from mental health issues and raising them with employers on behalf of members.
