About this course
Hot work is “any activity or process that generates flame, heat, or an incendiary spark, and introduces (or presents) a foreseeable risk of fire or explosion through a source of ignition by means of tools or equipment.” - GOV.UK
There are many kinds of industrial, maintenance and construction projects that involve hot work, which is a practice that can create significant Health & Safety hazards for workers and their workplace. In fact, it’s actually one of the biggest fire risks that employers, employees and property owners can face. Over the course of the last decade, hot work fires have resulted in an estimated £68 million worth of losses in the UK.
Throughout this course, we explore the common kinds of hot work and the hazards associated with practising them. The course covers responsibilities for carrying out hot work and the hierarchy of control measures, including the key procedures for safety during welding and cutting.
The course can be completed in just 15 minutes and provides a printable certificate upon completion of the end-of-training test.

It would've been more informative if somebody was talking rather than having to read everything. It makes learning easier
Informative, could be better
I personally don't believe that 5 questions is enough for a competency questionnaire, people would probably benefit from a longer questionnaire and the 60% pass mark seems really low to be able to pass a test, I would imagine that 80% would potentially look better. Not all people can learn easily from reading too, some people learn better from either practically doing it (Which I understand that isn't always reasonably practical) or from being spoken to. I flicked through the whole training and answered the questions to which I got 60% and passed, I don't believe this is a true representation of someone being able to confidently learn something.

Employers must ensure that all workplace Health & Safety risks are properly assessed, controlled and monitored, by either themselves or a Responsible Person, so that staff stay safe from serious and imminent danger when performing hot work. They have a responsibility to ensure that:
- All risks created by the use of, production of, or exposure to hazardous substances are assessed and controlled - The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002
- A fire risk assessment is carried out (by a competent person) to identify all potential ignition sources in the workplace -
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 - All risks of fire and explosions associated with potentially hazardous atmospheres are assessed and controlled - The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002
- All equipment for hot work operations are suitable and safe for employees to use - The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
