SECTION 1

The leading cause of fire in schools is arson. In fact, over half of school fires are started maliciously. Fires are often started out of school hours in the late evening, and outside of the premises - with materials that are close at hand. This section explains the nature of fire, fire growth and development, and the dangers of smoke.

The different fire signs you might see at work
SECTION 2

This section covers signs that relate to fire safety. We’ll explain what each sign looks like and what it means. Health and safety signs are there to help keep you safe, but people often don’t understand them, pay attention to them, or even know where they are in the workplace!

where fires could be located in schools
SECTION 3

In this section, we’ll be looking at fire hazards. A fire hazard is either a potential ignition source, or it can be anything that’s flammable or combustible. As you work your way through this section, you’ll be able to see what kind of fire hazards you may find in your workplace.

A school emergency plan
SECTION 4

Your organisation should have a Fire Action Plan. This plan should be created based on the outcome of a thorough risk assessment, and it will include a clear and simple evacuation procedure. So in this section, we’ll explain what you should do if you discover a fire in your school, including the procedure to follow if you need to contact emergency services.

Our presenter using a fire extinguisher
SECTION 5

In this section, we’ll discuss the different classes of fire and which type of fire extinguisher should be used for each class. There are five different classes of fire, each identified by a letter; these are A, B, C, D and F. It’s very important that you know where the fire extinguishers are in your organisation.

Some online courses are poor and feel a waste of time. This is valid, clear and well produced. More time on fire extinguishers is needed - I had to make notes and proabably won't remember in the heat (!) of the moment - but otherwise it was one of the few courses I haven't resented doing.
