About this course

Employers have a legal responsibility to ensure that their staff know where asbestos and related materials are likely to be found, how to avoid the risk of exposure and to provide the necessary protective equipment to keep them safe.

This high-quality Asbestos Awareness training course teaches you all you need to know about basic asbestos awareness in a concise online training format.

Asbestos is the name given to a group of natural minerals which have been used for centuries. Valued for its durability and heat resistance, asbestos was often used as insulation in buildings, as flooring and roofing, and sprayed onto ceilings and walls. However, when broken down into tiny fibres and breathed in, asbestos turns into a hazardous material which can lead to a host of life-threatening diseases – including asbestosis, pleural thickening, mesothelioma, and lung cancer. This is why awareness training is so important.

When was Asbestos banned in the UK?

In 1999, Asbestos was fully banned from use in the UK. However, despite this, it’s still responsible for over 5000 deaths every year. Many buildings constructed before the year 2000 may still have asbestos in them, meaning that it’s absolutely crucial that anyone who might be exposed – such as carpenters, plumbers, electricians, painters, and builders – must have asbestos awareness training.

This Asbestos Awareness training provides you with everything you need to know about the basics of asbestos safety awareness, and it does so in a concise, easily understood, and engaging format. However, please note – only HSE licensed contractors can test for and remove asbestos!  Whilst you can’t remove asbestos yourself, education around it can be life saving by taking into account asbestos risk management and awareness training.

Effective Asbestos Awareness Training - A life saver?

The Health & Safety Executive puts the number of Asbestos-related deaths at over 5,000 per year in the UK alone. That's an average of 13 people a day dying from conditions caused by previous exposure to asbestos. Learn why Asbestos Awareness training is so important.

Why is this training important?

Compliance

It's important that you comply with the law and know the ways in which it affects you and the way you work.

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 - which came into force on 6th April 2012 - requires that the responsible person (or duty holder) in all non-domestic premises is responsible for ensuring that people who work there or visit the premises are protected against ill-health from exposure to asbestos. This includes all non-domestic buildings – industrial, commercial or public buildings – for example, offices, schools, hospitals, factories, shops and warehouses.

"Every employer must prevent the exposure to asbestos of any employee employed by that employer so far as is reasonably practicable."

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012

Health and Safety at Work Act 1974

This states that "employers must protect the 'health, safety and welfare' of all their employees at work."

This Online Asbestos Awareness Training is IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) Approved and has been audited by the Independent Asbestos Training Providers (IATP). For additional quality assurance, this course is also accredited by CPD (Continuing Personal Development) and is approved by the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board).
This course takes just 35 minutes to complete and can be completed on any device.
Our online asbestos awareness training is ideal for any person who works in a situation where they might come into contact with asbestos, as well as everyone working in building and construction. There's a higher risk of exposure to asbestos in some roles than others. This includes construction workers, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, painters & decorators and site managers, supervisors and foremen. Our online training helps keep employees safe, whilst adhering to the necessary legislation. Asbestos is also present in many homes built before the year 2000, so anyone doing DIY should also be aware of how to stay safe around it.
Asbestos awareness training is mandatory for workers who could ‘foreseeably’ be exposed to asbestos. In particular, it should be given to demolition, refurbishment, maintenance and other tradesmen who are likely to disturb asbestos when carrying out work. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, so if you think you or your staff could come into contact with asbestos, get training sorted.
Despite asbestos being banned for over 20 years, around 5,000 people per year are still dying in the UK due to asbestos-related diseases. Asbestos awareness e-learning courses can play a vital role in preventing exposure and further harm from asbestos-containing materials.
If you're working towards SSIP accreditation, our asbestos eLearning certificates and other certificates can prove useful in the application process.
