Good Posture in the Workplace for Back Care Awareness Week 17th to 23rd October 2011

Posted on the 17th of October 2011 in News & Views

Did you know that back pain affects around 80% of us at sometime in our lives?
Many things may cause back problems, but the accumulated effect of regular poor posture is one of the contributory factors.

Poor posture when sitting and standing and poor posture and technique when lifting and carrying are covered in two of our training programmes – Manual Handling in the Workplace and Display Screen Equipment Training.

In these programmes the training concentrates on personal awareness, demonstrating best practice and looking at how simple adjustments can be made to improve safety and help avoid potential problems.

This week is BACK CARE AWARENESS WEEK – an appropriate time to make improvements to increase the chances of avoiding back pain.

Lifting and carrying are things we all do everyday – manual handling actually includes any task that involves moving an object of any size or weight from one position to another, so lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing – these are all manual handling. And it’s really easy to do BADLY. Luckily it’s not difficult to master GOOD manual handling technique and our training shows you effective lifting techniques, how to prepare for a lift, how your body works during a lift and how injuries can occur when it’s done incorrectly. Watch the short demonstration of using the iHasco Manual Handling training programme.

Knowing how to set up a workstation and acting upon this knowledge is a simple and cost effective way to improve the chances of avoiding back pain, both now and in the future. And everyone who spends a good deal of their day sitting at a desk, especially in front of a computer, should know how best to sit and work and how to properly set up their chair and desk, to encourage good posture.  The positioning of computer screen, mouse and keyboard are also extremely important to posture and should be taken into account in office workstation design. Watch the short demonstration of using the iHasco DSE training programme.

Some minor adjustments to sitting position or desk layout and following proper technique when lifting and carrying could be all that is needed to make the difference between a healthy back and storing up problems for the future –  really simple, low-cost and effective adjustments to help avoid workplace MSDs.
